Review by Don Henson

Don't know if Mr. Gooding, Jr. plays Kuba, or if Fidel does, but it is worth their checking out. Kleverly Unique, Brutally Addictive is how Patch Products describes the origin of the name Kuba. It is said to be an old European board game and indeed comes in a physical version from Patch Products as well.

Kuba epitomizes the concept of "simple to learn, a lifetime to master." I believe I first saw this quote years ago connected to the game of Go, or perhaps its spin off of Othello or Reversi. At any rate Kuba is very simple in concept but will challenge the best strategy minds at its top levels of play.

The concept to win in Kuba is to push either seven of the neutral marbles off the board, or all eight of your opponents marbles. The strategy involved in this process can get to be quite a challenge for the player. I really like games like this that one can play in the vein of a total distraction from the other things one is dealing with, sort of a "coffee break" for the mind.

Kuba is a very well done program with several alternate board styles and sounds, so one can change the look and feel if desired. The game seems to play smoothly and without glitches on my Mac, although I have seen comments that the internet play is a bit buggy. There is a patch for this on the Patch Products web page.

It would be nice to have a preferences file created to save one's settings. The game also only runs in 256 colors and doesn't just switch this seemlessly like most games with requirements that differ from your screen settings. The player needs to reset the screen in the Monitor & Sound control panel.
