Aladdin systems, makers of Stuffit Deluxe and other must-have utilities for the Mac, announced along-awaited upgrade for an existing product and a highly unanticipated acquisition of a new product.
For gamers, the update to ShrinkWrap that finally supports HFS+ disks and includes internal compression of disk images is a welcome note. ShrinkWrap has always been a great tool for creating images of CDs so that gamers who want totally maximized thuroughput can create images of their favorite CDs and run them at blinding speeds; further, mobile gamers who have teh elbow room on their drives but not wanting to carry the CDs with them find Disk Images a necessary evil. With compression in disk images, ShrinkWrap could prove to be of even more value to the mobile gamer.
For game designers, the version 6.0 of InstallerMaker, a powerful and cheap utility for distribution of shareware, was known before the show but welcome news nonetheless.
In a curious decision, Aladdin has decided to acquire a stock ticker program called MacTicker. While of little excitement to the general audience of MacReactor, the curious question nagging at the thoughts of attendees of the Aladdin Press Conference was what internet strategy that MacTicker boded for the future of Aladdin Systems. Aladdin has always had a rather tightly-meshed product line of utilities for the Mac. Sources from Aladdin at the show only hinted that we can expect to see a better picture of how MacTicker fits into a new product strategy for Aladdin Systems in the near future. The best this reporter was able to squeeze out was that there might be some form of further internet-style information integration of other Aladdin products, although which ones and tehwhat format is anyone's guess.
